Is it worth it to broil food?

Is it worth it to broil food? I have come across some great recipes that ask you to broil in the oven. On the other hand, I have read that broiling can cause hot splattering, a mess in the oven and kitchen, smoke.......in your opinion, is it worth it to broil? I don't have any kind of grill.
