I have badly burnt food on the bottom of my stock pot, how do I get it off?

I made soup yesterday, but I didn't add enough liquid. Some of the solid food burnt badly enough to make a hard black layer on the bottom of the pot. After getting the still edible stuff out I boiled dish water and let it sit overnight. Some of the char came off, but how do I get all of it off?
